The Power Of Habits In Everyday Life...
Dear Reader,
Think about this for a second and you'll see that though surprising, it does make sense. Researchers Wendy Wood, a professor psychology and business at the University of Southern California and David Neal a former assistant professor at USC have found that the very same thing happens to good habits as to the bad, we naturally revert to them in times of stress.
There's lots of research to back the idea that willpower is a limited resource. When you're dealing with multiple stressors, willpower wears out. It takes time and sleep to recover. Self regulation, whether of a tempting food or something else, draws on the same pool of willpower, and this makes controlling either a bit tougher.
When willpower is a challenge, or you have a limited supply (and who doesn't?), you fall back on what you know, avoiding new things. You revert to your default setting if you will. While the bad habits get all the attention, most people have many good habits established as well. Hard work. Exercise routines. Doing the thankless tasks no one else can. Though daily stress does bring inaction or destructive behaviors, it can also fuel our natural good habits.
For the current work, there were five different experiments where the research team demonstrated that when people are tired and stressed, they go back to fundamental routines, good or bad. In one project, students taking exams increased their performance of both good and bad habits. Those eating healthy foods at the start of the day were more apt to do this during the testing. Those used to eating an unhealthy breakfast stuck to their established morning routine.
And those in the habit of reading an educational part of the newspaper were more apt to keep reading the paper during exam week. Those who read the more entertaining parts of the paper also kept doing so during the week of exams. This was especially important because the increase in habitual reading appeared even with the greater demands on the time that students had to deal with during the week of exams.'

The Power Of Habits Continued...
Even if you've formed more bad habits than good, or grown up with bad habits
and know nothing else, it is possible to make changes. Note we didn't say easy...
we said possible. It will take work, planning and constant effort. But the rewards
will be amazing. The first step sounds obvious - breaking the bad habit, the
next is putting a good habit in its place. Here are some common sense tips to
get you started.
" Change the environment as many bad habits are cued by the context, the place we are. By changing our environment we can remove those cues. It's using the age old "out of sight, out of mind" thinking.
" Plan ahead, which calls for using the conscious mind to address the challenges we know to be out there. So if you're trying cut out junk food keeping healthy snacks in the car so you won't be tempted to stop for unhealthy options is the way to go.
" Disrupt established patterns by changing the sequence of actions in your day as this can shake things up enough to change a habit. Get your coffee at work instead of stopping at the coffee place. Or try to switch eating from your dominant hand to your non dominant hand and see how you manage eating.
" Set new habits in place, as habits come into play when we're tired and don't have much self-control. Drink water instead of other drinks, for instance.
To your good health,
